School Sports Premium
Sports Premium is an amount of money which the Government has agreed to allocate to schools for the last five academic years. Funding has been guaranteed for 2018/19 and is double what has previously been provided. The Sports Premium is to be used to increase the quality and breadth of PE and Sport provision, and increasing participation in PE and Sport.
This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children.
At Howden le Wear Primary School, we strive to promote healthy and active lifestyles and aim to provide sporting opportunities for all of our pupils.
In 2017/18, the Sport Premium funding for Howden-le-Wear Primary School was £17,230. The money was used for:
Investing in the Durham/Crook Cluster School Sports Partnership Service Level Agreement. This provides the school with the following:
- A full organised annual programme of competitions/tournaments/festivals in addition to the National School Games.
- Participation, inclusion and excellence opportunities.
- Termly bespoke CPD for curriculum physical development for all staff.
- Weekly provision of a coach for curriculum and after school activity in a variety of sports that changes half termly and is accessed by all age groups across the academic year. This includes quality assurance of sports coaches.
- SSP Network Meetings and cluster meetings to support PE Co-ordinators in their role developing PE & Sport.
- Promotion and development of links to local sports clubs
- Central co-ordination of school sport programmes in SSP area.
The additional ways we use our Sports Premium Funding this year:
- Paid for specialist sports coaches to come into school to work with pupils.
- Provision of Free After School Clubs for all pupils throughout the full academic year.
- Supporting transport costs to festivals and sporting events off site.
- Investing in new PE equipment as appropriate.
- Participation in the INSPIRE Project for 2017/18 working with Olympic, Commonwealth and GB swimmer Chris Cook who will visit the school termly to work with children and staff to ‘inspire’ participation in sport and PE.
The impact of this has been:
- Increased pupil participation in sport in school.
- Increased pupil participation in after school clubs in school.
- Children experience a wider range of sports
- Increased pupil participation in sporting clubs/societies outside of school – particularly in sports where coaches have visited school to work with our children – Bishop Auckland Rugby / Cricket.
- 100% of Year 6 children achieved the national school swimming expected standard for the last three years.
- Increasing sporting success at sports festivals and
- School Sports Leaders impact on playtime sporting opportunities for all.
- The school successfully won the Primary School Contribution to Leadership category in September 2017 at the County Durham Sports Leadership Awards.
- The school was awarded the AfPE Quality Mark with Distinction in December 2016.
- The school holds the Sainsbury’s |Games Gold Award.
